He was predeceased by: his parents, Jackson Kirkland and Amanda Kirkland (Singleton-Bullard); and his brother James "J. J.". He is survived by: his sister Violet Lee-Kirkland; his wife Hattie Jane Campbell-Kirkland; his children, Melvin Kirkland, Jr. (Candi), Michelle Burton, Cecilia Cummings (Calvin), Phillip Kirkland, Joseph Kirkland (Euchris), Lisa Hobson (Channing), Curtis Kirkland (Marie), Sylvia Johnson (John), Jason Kirkland (Cassandra) and Dwayne Kirkland (Sonya); his siblings, Leonard Kirkland (Sheila), John "Chuckie" Kirkland, Carmilla Harris and Ethel Truss; and his sisters-in-law, Vivian Kirkland and Betty Kirkland. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, cousins and other extended family relatives.
