He was predeceased by: his parents, Eleanor "Maude" Clara (McDade) and Charles E. Emery. He is survived by: his wife MaryAnn Emery (Hetzer); his children, Kristin, James Jr. (Carla) and Michael (Renee); and his grandson Caleb.

Due to Covid, a private visitation will be held in his memory on Friday, December 31, 2021, at Hoffmann Meyers Givnish Funeral Home.
