He was predeceased by : his wife Beverly (Jones); his son Jonathan; and his siblings, Charles, Larry, Doris Haupt and Patricia Pentz.

He is survived by : his children, Elizabeth Barto, Rebecca Appel and Herman, III (Melinda); his grandchildren, Maura Barto, Brianna (Clint Gills), Joshua Barto (Becky), Kaitlynn (Nicholas Hyde), Kelsi Appel, Carys Appel, Herman Zilch, IV and Hayden Zilch; his great grandchildren, Hunter, Easton, Lewis Gills and Bryson Hyde; and his brother Edward.
