He was predeceased by : his parents, Paul Yates and Mary Ferrell Yates. He is survived by : his son John "JJ" Yates Jr. (Meghan); his siblings, Donna Yates-Jones (Bob) of Eighty Four, PA and Paul David Yates Jr. of Washington, PA; his nephews, Rodney, Dean Yates and Heath Taggart (Sabrina); and his sister Ruth A. Yates-Taggart.
