He was predeceased by: his parents, James Porter Simmons and Stella Mae Higgins Simmons; his wife Lillie; his son Timothy; his grandson John III; and his son-in-law Dwight Hughes.
He is survived by: his children, Marie Detter (Al) of Erie, PA, Danielle Smith (Peter) of Houston, TX, Renee Hughes of Lowell, IN, Lisa Shockey (Jerry) of Austin, TX and John Jr. "Dan" Simmons (Worapanit) of DeMotte, IN.. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren and many great grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Walnut Creek Baptist Church.
