He was predeceased by: his parents, William H. Mekenney and Martha M. Nolan Mekenney; and his siblings, William Mekenney, Charles Mekenney and Doris Frank.

He is survived by: his wife Marlene Huffman Mekenney; his children, Debra Towson (Richard) and Michael Mekenney (Nancy); his grandchildren, Heather Truitt (Ryan), Kevin Mekenney, Kate Towson (Robert) and Matthew Towson; and his great grandchildren, Mackenzie, Kellen, Jett and Cruz.

Donations in his memory may be made to Del Vets #1, 2535 Veterans Drive, Wilmington, DE 19810.
