“Lastly, Bob Field loved nature. Here he is shoveling topsoil after planting a tree outside the old redbrick first Upper Dublin High School on Arbor Day likely in 1955 or '56 or '57 or '58. Rest in peace, Bob.”

Basil St George wrote a sympathy message

“Bob Field was a superb athlete. He started at quarterback as a sophomore, in the backfield with the late Otto Fad, who later starred as a lineman at Delaware, another UD. Bob wore No. 15, second row, behind the concrete-like chiseled Otto Fad (21). He did not play in his junior year because he injured his elbow nerve on a Bunsen Burner in chemistry lab,, requiring surgery. But he did return to quarterback in 1957. He was on the injured list so much that we nicknamed him "Brittle Bob."”

“Bob Field was the heart of our UDHS gatherings. In our class show, "Varsity Varieties," he played the banjo (center). .The "Varsity Varieties" opening lyrics still resonate with apologies to Cole Porter.: "Another opening, another show, ... three weeks and rehearse and rehearse, another week and it couldn't be worse."”

Basil St George wrote a sympathy message

“Bob Field was a close friend since junior high school. When the UDHS office would announce over the public-address system that The Ambler Gazette was there to pick up my stories about Upper Dublin, Bob nicknamed me "Cubby," for cub reporter. It stuck forever. He went out of his way all the time -- as an athlete diving into the wooden basketball court stands, as a football quarterback stretching for that extra yardage. His frequent injuries earned him the nickname "Brittle Bob." --Mike Sisak”

“Bob also went out of his way when we both attended Temple University. He would drive his VW from Oreland about 3-4 miles to Tennis Avenue in Ambler (coincidentally near his resting place) and pick me up at 419 and then down the hill past Shaeff Funeral Home to Main and pick up Billy Rose, who later was an administrator when Bob was the UDHS principal. We remained friends for decades. My wife asked if I offered to pay Bob for gas. He would likely not have accepted gas money. Truly generous.”
