He was predeceased by: his parents, Richard F. Kay and Anne Kay (Golden); his siblings, Bridget Kay and Byron Kay; his father-in-law Louis Jettinghoff; and his sister-in-law Beverly Jettinghoff.

He is survived by: his wife Karen; his children, Dr. Susan Granquist (Tim) of Honesdale, Kevin Kay (Elyse) of Honesdale and Maureen Mezick (Vinnie) of Honesdale; his grandchildren, Connor of Honesdale, Carl of Honesdale, Lucas of Honesdale, Aela of Honesdale, Emma of Honesdale, Anna of Honesdale, Evan of Honesdale and Grady of Honesdale; his sisters, Patricia Kay (Robert Przywieczerski) of Hagerstown, MD, Kelly Kay of Englewood, FL and Mary Clare Kay (Ronald Mantley) of Brewster, MA.; his mother-in-law Lorene Jettinghoff; and his siblings-in-law, Ruth Grothouse (Tom), Lisa Barlage (Kevin), Tom Jettinghoff of Ohio and Steve Jettinghoff (Sue) of Ohio.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that those wishing to make a memorial contribution consider two organizations that were close to Wendell's heart, the Wayne County Public Library or the Wayne County YMCA, or a charity of their own choosing.

“I am very sorry to hear of Wendell's passing. We were classmates at the Pettit College of Law, Class of 1980, (Ohio Northern University, Ada, Ohio.) He served well as a Commissioner, and Solicitor. He was a caring, hard working man and attorney. I am indebted to Wendell and to Rich Henry, fellow classmates, who recommended me to Judge Conway for a law clerk position, whom I served for 2.5 years in the early 1980's. My deepest condolences to Karen and the family. I will miss him. Leigh Redmon.”
