He was predeceased by: his parents, William Ewald and Pauline Ewald (Ziesman); his wife Mary McGinley Ewald; and his sisters, Roberta Knapp and Marlene Newbaker.

He is survived by: his daughter Susan Kidd; his granddaughters, Michelle and Rebecca Walker; his brothers, William, Theodore and Herbert; and his godson Joshua Handel. He is also survived by nieces and nephews.
