He was predeceased by: his parents, Patrick Cooney and Margaret Cooney (Ihnat); and his sisters, Maureen and Pamela. He is survived by: his wife Betty Cooney (Himmer); his sons, Brendan Cooney (Amy) and Eric Cooney (Karen); his granddaughters, Tara Cooney (Lindsey) and Eleanor Cooney; his great grandchild Finnegan Cooney; his siblings, Margie, Rachel, Patrick and Timothy; and his siblings-in-law, Rick Himmer (Karen) and Nancy Wesolosky (late Joseph).

In lieu of flowers, family suggests donations in his name to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital or Gallagher Hospice.
