He was predeceased by : his parents, Lemuel Pauling and Margaret Pauling (Emery); his wife Carolyn Grittner; his former life partner Mary Miller; and his sisters, Beverly Anne Boden and Margery Fry.

He is survived by : his children, Carol Jean Pauling Westerman (Fred) of Virginia, Thomas Wayne Pauling (Ellen) of North Carolina and David Vaughn Pauling (Nancy) of Virginia; his sister Patricia Ulrich of Allewnood; and his close friend Audrey Reed. He is also survived by six grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews.
