He is survived by: his children, Donald Mertz (Kathleen), Susan Helmers (Carl) and Patricia Hutchinson; his stepchildren, Thomas Hoffman (Barbara), Linda Chirieleison (Fred) and Gary Hoffman (Pamela); and his brother Robert Mertz. He is also survived by many grandchildren, step grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
