He was predeceased by: his spouse Alice Marie Mertz (Klingensmith); and his sibling Virginia Mertz. He is survived by: his children, Virginia Mertz (Richard Cvetetic), Joseph Mertz, Jr. (Rebecca), David Mertz (Jacqueline) and Mary Alice Mertz (Rick Wagner); his siblings, Helen Mertz, Katherine Rafferty (Mertz) and Marion; and his grandchildren, Nicole, Joseph, Michael, Margaret and Kristina Mertz. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
