He was loved and cherished by many people including : his wife Karen Shanahan (Kaylor); his parents, James Shanahan and Antoinetti Shanahan; his brothers, Michael Shanahan (Kristie), Dr. James Shanahan Jr. (Jonette), Jeffrey Shanahan (Tara) and Patrick Shanahan (Christina); and his stepchildren, Jeremy Kaylor, Justin Kaylor (Jessica), Kyra Smargiasso (Todd) and Brandon Kaylor (Natasha).

His significant contributions to the healthcare sector, marked by philanthropy and partnerships with esteemed institutions like the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center and the American Cancer Society, have left an enduring legacy in the fight against cancer.
