With heavy hearts, we announce the death of Emily Kirkland Grimball of Charleston, South Carolina, born in Spartanburg, South Carolina, who passed away on June 3, 2023 at the age of 93. She was predeceased by: her parents, Dr. Needham Lawton Kirkland and Lillian Sack Kirkland; and her husband Berkeley Grimball. She is survived by: her children, Berkeley Grimball Jr. (Ingrid), Lawton K. Grimball (Betsy) and Meta Frasch (Charles); and her grandchildren, Rafe Grimball, Garth Grimball, Eliza Smith (Turner), Harriet Haan (Matthew), Anne Lawton Grimball, Wayne Hiott (Ambra) and Emily Hiott. She is also survived by 4 great grandchildren.

I looked forward to chatting with her about plants at the monthly get togethers following the meetings. She was a wealth of knowledge about plants and about Charleston, South Carolina in general. She was bright, charming and articulate. She touched many hearts, and we will all miss her. My sincere condolences to her family, and to her friends and loved ones that she left behind.”
