He was predeceased by: his parents, Maxie McGee Gibbs and James Carlisle Gibbs, Sr.; and his brothers, Donnie Gibbs, Sidney Gibbs and Robert Gibbs.

He is survived by: his wife Jo Gibbs; his sons, James Lee Gibbs (Macie) and Jeffery Lynn Gibbs (Kristie); his grandchildren, Maysun Gibbs, Lindsay Gibbs, Justin Gibbs, Jeffrey Gibbs and Ashlyn Gibbs; and his sister Louise Britt.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Florence Baptist Temple or to McLeod Hospice.
