He was predeceased by: his parents, John O'Neal and Elizabeth Spivey Lane; his wife Carolyn Matthews Lane; his children, Cliff Barbee and Donna B. Brown; and his brother Rueben Lane.

He is survived by: his children, Palmer "P. J.", Barbara Lane and Hope Hedin; his siblings, Leonard Lane (Sharon), Miriam Collins (Lanneau) and Marilyn Jackson (Carl Lee); and his granddaughter Elizabeth Barbee.
