He was predeceased by: his parents, Homer Kornegay and Mary Jane Grady Kornegay; and his siblings, Jack Kornegay, David Kornegay, Ricky Kornegay, Ann Miller and Alma Smith.

He is survived by: his wife Dixie Lee Couch Kornegay; his children, Melvin "Junior" Kornegay Jr., Jeannie Powell and Regina Dunaway (Kenny); his stepchildren, Eric Caughorn, Sandi Avinger and Vicki Wooten; and his siblings, Allen Kornegay, Brenda Taylor (Ronnie), Kathy Matthis and Betty Lou Sisk.
