He was predeceased by: his spouse Myra Jane Whelchel Byars; his parents, Guy Festus Byars and Essie Spencer Byars; and his siblings, Talmadge Byars and Evelyn Williams.
He is survived by: his daughters, Lori Byars Hardin (Donnie) of Cowpens and Myra Byars; his grandchildren, Meredith Olson (Eric, Caroline Hardin) and Emilee Hardin; his great grandchildren, Abbie Olson, Aubree Jane Martin and Ryker Hardin; and his siblings-in-law, Pearl Byars of Gaffney, Eula F. Whelchel of Cowpens, Tom Whelchel of Cowpens, Rufus Whelchel (Laura, Richard Whelchel) of Cowpens, Furman Whelchel (Faye) of Gaffney and Bobby Jackson of Spartanburg. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
