He was predeceased by: his wife Grace Lanier Whelchel; his parents, Napoleon Whelchel and Grace Lovelace Whelchel; his daughter Elizabeth Parris (Lib); his son-in-law Henry McMurray; and his siblings, Willie Collins, Tom Whelchel, Ned Whelchel and Jack Whelchel.
He is survived by: his children, John Thomas Whelchel (J. T.), Anne Phillips (Wayne) of Gaffney, Barbara McMurray of Gaffney, Sally Mayfield (Dennis) of Gaffney, Evelyn Nelson (Chuck) of Gaffney and Sue Mayfield of Gaffney; his sisters, Mildred Phifer of Spartanburg and Mary Reid of Greenwood; and his son-in-law Lee Parris. He is also survived by sixteen grandchildren; twenty-four great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren.
