He was predeceased by: his parents, Mack Smiley and Jean Owen Smiley; and his sister Sylvia Dover. He is survived by: his wife Diane Bullock Smiley; his sons, Bryce Smiley (Rachel) of Gaffney and Nicholas Smiley of Gaffney; his sisters, Wanda Hawkins (Ricky) of Gaffney, Ann Hutson (William) of Alabama and Gloria McCraw (Perry) of Irmo; and his brother-in-law Rory Dover of Blacksburg.
