He was predeceased by: his wife Sarah Allen Patterson; his parents, David Patterson, Jr. and Harriett Clough Patterson; his children, Stanley Patterson and Maggie Maggio; his grandson Jeffrey Davis; and his siblings, Ada Meserve, Jerry Patterson and John Patterson.
He is survived by: his children, David Patterson (Elaine) of Maine, Kenneth Patterson of California, Roxanne Reynolds of Gaffney, Dawne Howard (Chuck) of Landrum and Karen Bartholomew (Terry) of Oregon; his granddaughters, Jennifer Pittman (Phillip) and Gena Henderson (Claude); his great grandchildren, Jessica Black (Jeff), Katherine Pittman (Jeremy), Tyler Henderson (Nikki) and Alyssa Henderson; and his great great grandchild Jacoby Hall.
