He was predeceased by: his wife Betty Elizabeth Bradshaw Thackston; his parents, Henry Grady Thackston, Sr. and Mary Eula Davis Thackston; his daughters, Linda Burrell and Tammy Thackston; his brothers, Garvin Thackston, Oneal Thackston and Grady Thackston, Jr.; and his granddaughter Heidi Burrell.
He is survived by: his children, Deborah T. Waddell (Gerald) of Lyman and Ira Richard Thackston, II (Jodi) of Laurens; his grandchildren, Max Gresham (Jessica), Jessica Walker (Doug), Kesha Garner and Logan Thackston; and his great grandchildren, Haleigh (Brooke), Katy, Chantz, Kinley, McKenna, Peyton, Hudson, Joshua, Aubrey and Terri Baier of Astoria, Oregon. He is also survived by many other extended family members and friends.
