With heavy hearts, we announce the death of Leona Pope Wilkes of Hemingway, South Carolina, born in Georgetown, South Carolina, who passed away on November 5, 2021 at the age of 80. Leave a sympathy message to the family on the memorial page of Leona Pope Wilkes to pay them a last tribute.

She was predeceased by: her parents, Richard Pope and Edna Pope; and her sister Johnnie Marlowe. She is survived by: her spouse Almey "Junior" Wilkes; her children, Danny Wilkes of Garden City, Rodney Wilkes (Marla) of Johnsonville and Joyce "Gail" Shelley of Myrtle Beach; and her grandchildren, Matthew Wilkes (Jamie), Emily Grier (Patrick), Jared Shelley (Melinda), Eric Wilkes (Jessica), Allison Fowler (Brad) and Carson Wilkes. She is also survived by her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, please use good judgment, practice social distancing, and please wear a mask if attending.

“In loving memory of Leona Pope Wilkes, I’ll always remember Miss Leona’s kindness, spirituality, and generosity which always stood out to me. I remember most the time I spent at the river house with the entire family and we waited anxiously for the lunar eclipse. As it approached we got to our stations and donned our eclipse gear. It came…it went. But we stared into the sky for moments until it passed. I say all this knowing that when we look upward now, we know where Miss Leona rests.”
