He was predeceased by: his parents, William Henry Smith and Margaret Ellen Milton Moore. He is survived by: his wife Tammy Lou Shehorn Smith; his children, Bettina I. McKenzie (Walter) and Markus H. Smith (Michaela); his siblings, Joyce Foster, Kay Smith, Kathy Smith, Michael Williams, Eddie Williams and Richard Williams; his grandchildren, Elizabeth McKenzie, Cameron J. McKenzie (Taylor), David J. Smith and Marvin Smith; and his great grandchild Isabella A. McKenzie.
