Richard Carlough Obituary
Richard Carlough, 69, died of a sudden heart attack in his home in Myrtle Beach in the early morning hours of January 26, 2018. Richard ("Richie") was born in Queens, NY to Howard Carlough and Marie (Baumann) Carlough. A gifted athlete from a young age, Richie was the starting quarterback and safety for Valley Stream High School.
He also was a starter on the varsity basketball and baseball teams. Richie excelled as a pitcher, sometimes recording 18 or 19 strikeouts in a game with his strong fastball. Richie went on to play baseball at the University of Kansas, and then semi-professionally on Long Island. Richie played guitar in a band called the Valstrums and continued to love music throughout his life.
He was an avid runner, hunter, and fisherman, as well as a scratch golfer. His other interests included trivia and cooking. Richie lived in Oakdale, NY and served as a police officer on Long Island for 25 years. Always handy with a set of tools, part of Richie"s service in the force included fixing police cruisers. In addition to police work, Richie also owned and operated a small construction business.
Richie"s witty, fun-loving personality brightened the lives of the many friends that remained dear to him throughout his life, both on Long Island and in Myrtle Beach, where he moved in 2005. But dearest of all was his wife Virginia (Brush) Carlough. Richie and Virginia ("Gigi") were married on June 19, 1971. Together they raised two cherished daughters, Kristin and Megan who expanded the family when they married Ron and Jimmy, his loved son-in-laws.
A devoted and loving husband and father, Richie felt the greatest pride and joy in his six grandchildren, Matthew, Jacqueline, Ava, James, Evan, and William. A funeral service will be held at McMillan-Small Funeral Home, 910 67th Ave N, Myrtle Beach, SC at 12:00 noon on Tuesday, January 30th, 2018. A wake will be held 3-5 PM at the same location on Monday, January 29th, 2018.
For those unable to attend, a separate memorial service will be held at St. John Nepomucene Parish, 1140 Locust Ave, Bohemia, NY, at a later date.
