He was predeceased by: his parents, Samuel Cecil Varner and Mary Rogers Varner; his brother Allen Varner; and his son-in-law Thomas Cook, Jr.. He is survived by: his wife Katherine Sweatt Varner; his children, Samuel M. Varner II (Tracey), Laurie Cook, Tina Dinkins (Rob), Nicole Grimsley (Brad) and Sibbie Varner; his siblings, Douglas Varner (Barbara), Cliff Varner, Shirley Brading and Allene Gettys; and his grandchildren, Zack, Mark, Hailey, Ellen, Rebecca, Miles and Shaw.
