He was predeceased by: his parents, Charles Joseph Herning and Lena Lahue Chester Herning; his son Mikie Joe Herning; and his siblings, William Dotson Herning and Betty M. Herning.

He is survived by: his wife Elaine Williams Herning; his stepchildren, Dennis Rosure, Candice Mikiali and Darius Moses; his sister Ann Carr (Tony); and also Peppe Le Pew.
