He was predeceased by: his wife Jean Shepard; his granddaughter Icie Mae; and his son Don Birchfield (Michelle). He is survived by: his sons, Ronnie (Molly), David (Sandy), Benny Jr., Greg and Cory; his stepsons, Donny Hawkins and Harold Hawkins; and his grandson Robin Hawkins. He is also survived by 23 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren, and 7 great great grandchildren.
