He was predeceased by: his parent Don Walton; his wife Betty Ann Wittman Essex; his brother Jack Essex; and his sons-in-law, Danny Turner and Jim Bimson.
He is survived by: his parent Cora Gladys Baker Essex; his children, David Essex (Dorothy) of Georgetown, SC, Michael Essex (Marie) of Rego Park, NY, Beth Bimson of Murfreesboro, TN and Carol Turner of Milton, TN; and his siblings, Keith Essex, Jean Ann Farley of Big Springs, TX, Emily Denton of Enid, OK and Joey Pedigo of Oklahoma City, OK. He is also survived by five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorial may be made to St. Mark's United Methodist Church building fund in memory of Dr. Essex.
