She was predeceased by: her husband Richard Mayo Cate; and her parents, Thomas Stewart and Kathryn Jett Cox of Knoxville. She is survived by: her daughter Elizabeth Gail Cate (Betsy); her son-in-law Fred Jarrett Sussner; and her grandsons, Richard Harrison Cate-Sussner (Hank) of Nashville and Hank.

In leu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Carolyn's name to one of the charities she lovingly supported in life: Alive Hospice Inc., St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Berea College, or St. Luke's Community House.
