He was predeceased by: his mother Bessie Alexander Shelton; his parents-in-law, Flournoy and Margaret Leighton May; his grandparents, Kelley Alexander and Ruby Owens; his sister Judy Shelton; and his sister-in-law Wilma Johnston.

He is survived by: his wife Cheryl May Shelton of Rogersville, AL; his children, Jeffrey Johnston (Jessica) of Knoxville, TN, Bradley Johnston (Heather) of Goldendale, WA and Teresa Sartain (William Andrew) of Rogersville, AL; and his grandchildren, Adrie, Ryker, Ayla and Cameron Johnston.
