He was predeceased by: his parents, Martin Marion Gifford and Anne Belle Gifford. He is survived by: his wife Polly Gifford; his sisters, Marian Edwards, Miriam Shipp of Atlanta, Georgia. and Martina Lyons; and his daughters, Angela Crutchfield of Pace and Tracy Gifford (Paul Chlebo) of Pensacola.

He had a long journey with Alzheimer's. For six years he was cared for at home with brief stays in nursing homes.
