He was predeceased by : his son Eliezer Mendez; his father Nicasio Ruiz; and his stepfather Nicolas Mendez. He is survived by : his wife Miriam Hernandez Duran; his children, Stephen, Sarah and Rebeca Mendez; his stepchildren, Dominic and Breanna Duran; and his siblings, Esther, Cleotilde, Guadalupe, Virginia Ruiz, Cruz Ruiz Alaciel, Saul Ruiz Alaciel, Gregorio Mendez, Benjamin Mendez and Moises Mendez.

After surviving COVID and being given a second chance at life, he appreciated the little things in everyday life.
