He was predeceased by: his parents, William Raleigh Self and Inez Jordan Self; and his siblings, Peggy Self Brazil, William Jerry Self of Rock Hill, Ray Franklin Self of Rock Hill, Glen Edward Self, Sr. of Rock Hill and David Raleigh Self of Rock Hill.

He is survived by: his wife Margie Olivarez of College Station, Texas; his sister Frances Self Mynatt of Gatlinburg, TN; his children, William Reid Self of College Station, Texas and Mariella Marie Self of Houston, Texas; his stepchildren, Monica Hurrey Longoria, Cruz Zenaido Hurrey, John Sidney Hurrey of College Station and Eloy Tomas Hurrey of Houston, Texas.; and his grandchildren, William Sullivan Self Lane of Houston, Harper Rose Hurrey, Adalyn Grace Hurrey of College Station and Ava Kaye Hurrey of Houston.

Through his teaching of medical ethics, Dr. Self impacted the careers of innumerable health care professionals, while also serving on hospital ethics committees and making numerous scholarly contributions to his field.

“I worked with Don in Norfolk, VA when he was faculty at Old Dominion University and then newly forming Eastern Virginia Medical School, At EVMS he directed the Human Values in Medicine department and was among those across the nation who developed the discipline of Biomedical Ethics. His drawl of South Carolina "Kershaw-ese" I called did not mask his bright and creative insights and brilliance in the developing field. HIs articles and research over the years were solid and exemplary.”
