She is survived by: her daughters, Alma Mater (United States) and Ericka Shaw; her husband Ed Bennett; her children, Blair Schlicher and John Bennett; her siblings, Roselyn McGrew, Rotanza Pearson (Willie), Tawny Brownlow (Keon), Ira Lee Sanders Jr., Jerry Sanders and Stanley Sanders; and her grandson Curtis Jerome Shaw III. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

“ED, Ericka and family, It is with great sadness that my good friend and colleague has passed away. I'm sure Janell was strong until her passing. So many memories of her when we were attending TWU together and had many conversations about school and often times sat in the Houston airport waiting for our late flights back to Corpus and San Antonio. She was a fighter and stood for what was for what was right in all she faced despite many obstacles. I will miss her and our conversations. God bless”
