He was predeceased by : his brother Wallace Culps; and his grandson Michael Culps. He is survived by : his wife Patsy Jean Whitley; his children, Paul and Cindy Hickman (David); his grandchildren, Jason Graves (Bridgette), Jeremiah Graves (Jennifer), Heather Culps, Sean Culps and Kendall Cruz (Vaughn); and his sister Elaine Hartman.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Vernon's memory be made to the American Cancer Society or Disabled American Veterans charities.
