He was predeceased by: his parents, Gladys Hayes Crates and Robert Cameron Crates; and his brother Robert Bruce Crates. He is survived by: his friend John; his wife Angela Tilley Crates; his daughters, Chandler, Cameron and Campbell Crates; his uncle Daniel M. Crates (Elise); his cousin Cameron C. Matthews; his siblings-in-law, Marisa Tilley Hammond, Lisa Tilley Anderson (Michael) and Rice Matthews Tilley, III (Michelle); and his sibling's children, Lucy, Samantha Leonard, Morgan Tilley, Tripp, Parker Hammond and Rice Tilley, IV.
