He was predeceased by : his daughter Norma A. Garza; his parents, Atanacio Chavez and Claudia Elizondo; and his sister Rachel Partida. He is survived by : his wife Maria Chavez; his children, Marisela Ochoa (Hector), Cindy Casas (Luis), Jose Chavez and Melissa Sanchez (Darrell); and his brother Ignacio Chavez. He is also survived by eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

Visitation was held on Tuesday, April 16th 2024 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Memorial Funeral Home - Edinburg (208 E Canton Rd, Edinburg, TX 78539). A rosary was held on Tuesday, April 16th 2024 from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the same location. A funeral service was held on Wednesday, April 17th 2024 from 10:00 AM to 10:30 AM at the same location. A burial was held on Wednesday, April 17th 2024 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the Palm Valley Memorial Gardens (4607 N Sugar Rd, Pharr, TX 78577).
