He was predeceased by: his parents, Martin Richard and Opal Marie Swindell Atherton; his brother Bobby Atherton, Sr.; and his grandparents, Will, Roberta Atherton, Claude and Ella Swindell.
He is survived by: his wife Barbara Atherton; his children, Jason Atherton, Bradley Atherton (Leeann), Michael Atherton (Faye) and Allison Atherton; his granddaughter Jessica Atherton; his sister Carolyn Brown; his grandchildren, Ryan, Brooklyn, Allison, Chelsea, Dallas, Daniel, Danielle and David; his sister-in-law Ellen Atherton; and his nephews, Alan Brown, Woody Atherton and Bobby Atherton Jr.. He is also survived by nine great-grandchildren.
Visitation was held on Thursday, December 11th 2025 at 1:00 PM at the Highland Terrace Baptist Church (3939 Joe Ramsey Blvd E, Greenville, TX 75401). A funeral service was held on Thursday, December 11th 2025 at 2:00 PM at the same location.
