He was predeceased by : his parents, Lucy Faye Smith (Bridges) and Ernest Riley Thornton; his stepfather Henry Smith; his siblings, Kenneth "Hawk" Thornton, Jimmy Thornton, Ray Thornton and Nancy Smith; his grandson Zachary Ryan Smith; and his close friend Gloritta Miller.
He is survived by : his children, Kim Williams (Lynn) of Woodville, TX, Richard Thornton (Julie) of Albuquerque, NM, Rachael (Rodney Rogers) of Groveton, TX, Joe Glenn Thornton, Jr. of Carrizozo, NM, Joshua Thornton (Tammie) of Boise, ID and Francis Thornton of Groveton, TX; his sister Ann Smith Lee of Lufkin, TX; his grandchildren, Jason Woods, Jordan Duhon (Tater), Jacob Williams, Jassamyn Thornton, Garrett, Hannah Smith, Jacie, Taylor, Amber Thornton and Cody Furness; and his great grandchild McKenzie Lynn Thornton. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
