He is survived by: his wife Merleen; his children, Cynthia Diane Carstens Whiting, Cathy Michelle Carstens Trehus (Paul), Dennis Ryan Carstens (Bubba) and Richard Todd Carstens (Tiger); and his siblings, Emmett Ronald Carstens and Laurie Eveline Winkler. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, and 1 great great grandchild.
