He was predeceased by : his parents, James Albert and Lillie Mae Simon Gray; his brothers, Cleophus, Walter and Warren Gray; and his daughter Thelma (Virgil Gray Jr.).

He is survived by : his wife Novella Gray; and his children, Sabrina Ward, Dana (Orlando Gray), Jeffery Chandler, June (Dallas Cormier) and Joel Chandler. He is also survived by nieces, nephews and cousins.

A wake was held on Friday, April 12th 2024 from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM at the Lockwood Funeral Home, Inc. (9402 Lockwood Dr, Houston, TX 77016). Visitation was held on Saturday, April 13th 2024 from 11:00 AM to 11:55 AM at the Mt Pilgrim Baptist Church (2401 Woodard St, Houston, TX 77026). A funeral service was held on Saturday, April 13th 2024 from 12:00 PM to 1:30 PM at the same location. The military honors was held on Monday, April 15th 2024 from 2:15 PM to 2:30 PM at the Houston National Cemetery (10410 Veterans Memorial Dr, Houston, TX 77038).
