He was predeceased by: his parents, Frederick P. Hempfling and Esther Rahrig Hempfling (Rahrig); and his brother Fred Hempfling. He is survived by: his wife Sue Hempfling; and his sister Jane Hempfling Spieles (Larry). He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
