He was predeceased by : his parents, Olegario Mata and Olivia Mata; and his siblings, Tomasita G. Mata, Beatrice M. Garcia and Olegario G. Mata Jr..

He is survived by : his wife Lucia L. Mata of Kingsville; his siblings, Connie Martinez (Flo), Marta Mata and Ruben Mata (Margie); and his aunt Felicidad M. Mejia. He is also survived by nineteen grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren, cousins, nieces, and nephews.
