He is survived by : his wife Marilyn; his sister June Prewitt; his children, Cathy, Richard, Phillip Challenner and Jeanne Anne Nabavi; his grandsons, Ryan, Aaron Challenner and Omeed Nabavi; his stepchildren, Melissa Brooks, Stephanie Gilbert and Billy Grant Ruhman; his stepgrandsons, Monroe Eerebout, Rubin Arzate, Isaac Arzate, Ashton Brosi and Levi Stewart; and his brother Richard.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Phillips University Legacy Foundation.
