He was predeceased by : his father Ronald Dee McDowell; his brother Ryan Hay; and his grandparents, Raymond, Laverda McDowell, Lawrence and Gertrude Heitzman.

He is survived by : his wife Julie McDowell; his children, Rider McDowell, Michael Shelton (Brianna) and Rachael Shelton; his grandchildren, Caleb Shelton and Layla Shelton; his mother Marilyn McDowell Hay; his sister Melissa Gaunder (Michael); his nieces, Kaci Gaunder and Robyn Gaunder; and his nephew Justin Gaunder (Amber).
