He was predeceased by : his parents, George F. Stephens, Jr. and Imogene Elane Moore; his former life partner Donna Jean Brand; and his brother Dr. George F. Stephens III. He is survived by : his wife Stella Vance; his daughters, Susan Leigh Stephens Schwertner (Danny) and Sharon Lynn Stephens Knight (Warren); his grandchildren, Stephanie Buchholz (Matt), Amanda Schwertner, Lawson Schwertner and Edith Knight; his great grandchildren, Madyson and Mackenzie Buchholz; his brother Bobby Dan Stephens (Gail); his stepchildren, Clayton Vance (Jana), Catherine Grander Vance and Michelle James (Jeff); and his stepgrandchildren, Nathan Vance, Sarah Vance, Justin Vance, Samantha Grander, Brittany Grander and Jessica James.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Baptist Church in Portland or Garner Field Road Baptist Church in Uvalde, Texas.
