He was predeceased by : his parents, Jim Mays and Mayflower Cannaday Mays; and his great grandchild Ella Mendez. He is survived by : his children, Jennifer Cooper (Jerry) of Talco and John Russell "Rusty" Mays (Leanora Bass) of Saltillo; his grandchildren, Jace Cooper (Sheena), Jillian Weaver (Cody) and Jacquelyn Mendez (Levi); his great grandchildren, Olivia, Ollie Mendez, Jax Hagan, Milton, Baylin Cooper, Christian, Zackary and Jaylee Weaver; and his siblings, Gerald Mays, Jimmye Garner and Christine Kerr.
