He was predeceased by: his parents, Arthur Cates and Ivy Alexander Cates; and his children, Diane Weathersby, Desiree Vaughn and Arthur Kates.
He is survived by: his wife Edna Blanchard Kates; his children, Alton Kates Jr., Michael Vaughn and Tami Vaughn; his grandchildren, Cameron McDuffie, Jasmin McDuffie and Malik Weathersby; and his children, Deja McDuffie, Cameron Amari McDuffie, Rhyan McDuffie and Kimora Weathersby. He is also survived by his extended family & friends.
Visitation was held on Thursday, February 5th 2026 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the Maranatha Bible Church (7855 TX-1604 Loop, Converse, TX 78109). A funeral service was held on Thursday, February 5th 2026 at 11:00 AM at the same location. A burial was held on Friday, February 6th 2026 at 10:15 AM at the Fort Sam National Cemetery (1520 Harry Wurzbach Rd, San Antonio, TX 78209).
